INFLUENCE OF THE CONTINENTAL CLIMATECLIMATE
The prevailing climate in the Rioja wine area is a Mediterranean climate with Atlantic and Continental influences.

The Atlantic influence comes from the northwest in the form of rain and moist winds. This is the main source of the rainfall that nourishes this area.

The Continental influence comes from the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, bringing cold air from the Sistema Ibérico mountain range in through the southern part of the Rioja PDO area.
This type of climate provides the dry cold weather characteristic of the winter.
Together with the main Mediterranean climate, these two influences create a perfect balance between the heat from the Mediterranean, the rain from the Atlantic and the cold from the Sistema Central. Their combined effect is one of the most important foundations for the best possible development of the vines.

It is important to bear in mind that the different climatic influences will be more pronounced in the different areas. This means that in the Rioja Oriental, for example, the Mediterranean influence will be more pronounced, while in parts of Rioja Alta the Continental and Atlantic influences will play a more specific role.
The climate is one of the most important factors influencing the diversity of our vineyards.
